Premier Wen encourages HIV sufferers to live with hope on World AIDS Day
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao encouraged HIV/AIDS sufferers to live on with hope and confidence during his visit to a Beijing hospital on the World AIDS Day, which falls on Tuesday. At the Beijing Home of Red Ribbon in Ditan Hospital, Wen and Vice Premier Li Keqiang visited two AIDS patients and medical volunteers, experts. Since China reported its first AIDS case in 1985, the world's most populous nation had recorded 319,877 HIV/AIDS cases and 49,845 deaths by October, according to the Ministry of Health.

Chinese president vows to mobilize society to improve AIDS control
Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged to mobilize the whole society to improve AIDS/HIV control, when taking part in a gathering of AIDS prevention volunteers here Monday, a day before the 22nd World AIDS Day. It was the fourth time in six years that Hu met medical staff, researchers, AIDS patients and volunteers ahead the day. These high-profile moves showcased the government's resolve to tackle the growing AIDS problems in the country and help remove the social stigma against HIV-positive people.

Chinese foundation marks anniversary, raises fund for AIDS prevention
Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS celebrated its 20th anniversary Friday in Beijing. The foundation raised fund of about 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars) on the ceremony for STD (sexually transmitted disease) and AIDS programs in China. Donors included private sector, the largest being Coca-Cola China with 7.064 million yuan, and faith groups such as The Hong Kong Christian Churches Union.

TCM benefits 9,000 HIV/AIDS sufferers
The pilot program to treat HIV/AIDS with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had benefited 9,267 people, said the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Thursday. The program was jointly initiated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the administration in five provinces in 2004. The effort had been expanded to include another 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

China confronts "severe task" of AIDS prevention, treatment: Vice Premier
Despite the slower spread of the HIV epidemic, China still faced "a severe task" of AIDS prevention and treatment, Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday. "China is still confronted with a severe task of AIDS prevention and treatment, although the spread of the epidemic has slowed down thanks to the joint efforts of government, professionals and the public," Li said in a meeting with Executive Director of Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Michel Sidibe.

2nd clinical trial for China's HIV/AIDS vaccine
China has conducted its second phase of clinical trials of a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. This is the first time experts are assessing the safety and efficiency of the vaccine in high-risk groups. More than 230 volunteers took part in this second phase in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Scientists are expected to decide, based on results, whether to go ahead with a third phase of trials.

China's health minister warns of HIV spread
AIDS is spreading rapidly among high-risk groups in parts of China and is threatening to become a serious epidemic, said Minister of Health Chen Zhu on Tuesday. A total of 319,877 people had been registered HIV positive, including 102,323 AIDS patients and 49,845 deaths, as of Oct. 31, according to statistics released on a national AIDS control meeting in Shanghai.

First home-made HIV/AIDS vaccine ends 1st-phase tests
The first stage of a three-phase clinical test for China's first joint HIV/AIDS vaccine has been completed in Nanning, capital of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The 15-month-long test came to an end over the weekend as scientists of the Guangxi regional Centre for Disease Control and Prevention finished follow-up examinations on 49 volunteers inoculated with the vaccine.

Chinese director starts filming documentary on reducing AIDS discrimination
Established Chinese director Gu Changwei, a cinematographer in Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine" in 1993, started to shoot a documentary on reducing people's discrimination toward HIV/AIDS Sunday. The film, tentatively called "Mo Shu Xing Dong," or "Magic Move", depicts how people infected with HIV/AIDS are leading their lives in society. A person infected with the disease offers to work for Gu's film "Mo Shu Shi Dai" or "Magic Age" and the change takes place.

Henan Sets up NGO for AIDS Prevention
Central China's Henan Province, which has the second highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country, set up on Monday a non-governmental AIDS prevention and treatment organization. The Henan AIDS Prevention and Treatment Association will play an active role in AIDS prevention education and help those infected with the disease, said Huang Wei, chairman of the non-governmental organization.
