Shanghai's permanent population approaches 20 mln

February 20, 2010 -- Shanghai's permanent population amounted to 19.21 million at the end of 2009, approaching the 20 million mark, and their per capita floor space has reached 34 square meters.

According to the latest data recently released by the local statistical bureau, the number of Shanghai's permanent residents stood at 19.21 million at the end of 2009, including 13.79 million registered permanent residents. The natural growth rate of permanent residents is 0.27 percent and that of registered permanent residents is negative 0.1 percent.

With the rise in residents' living standards, every 100 urban households presently own on average 14 cars, 196 air conditioners, 223 mobile phones and 123 PCs, and every 100 rural households own 190 color TVs, 93 washing machines, 94 showers, 174 mobile phones, 135 air conditioners and 54 PCs.

In 2009, Shanghai's price index of real estate sales, the price index of new housing sales and the price index of new commercial housing sales increased in total by 7.4 percent, 9.2 percent and 9.9 percent respectively, compared to that of 2008. Currently, the per capita floor space of Shanghai's urban residents has reached 34 square meters.

The wealth of Shanghai residents can also be reflected in their inflating wallets. By the end of 2009, the total deposit of all the residents of Shanghai had reached 1435.77 billion yuan, and the deposit increased by 226.92 billion yuan in 2009.

By the end of 2009, the number of Shanghai's various civilian vehicles had reached 2.84 million, up 6.3 percent compared to that of 2008. Of them, the number of automobiles stood at 1.47 million, up 11.5 percent and the number of private cars stood at 8.52 million, up 18.3 percent.
