Tibet's population reaches 2.9 mln at end of 2009

BEIJING, April 1, 2010 -- Tibet had a permanent population of 2.9 million at the end of 2009, according to a gazette released by the Tibet Autonomous Regional Statistics Bureau.

The region's population increased by 29,500 at the end of 2009 over the previous year. Its urban population was 690,300, 23.8 percent of the total and its rural population was 2.21 million, according to the gazette.

The region had a birth rate of 15.3 per thousand and a mortality rate of 5.1 per thousand in 2009, with a natural growth rate of 10.2 per thousand.
