China's population of over 65's to reach 109.56 million

May 26, 2009  -- The Ministry of Civil Affairs recently released the 2008 Statistical Report of Civil Affairs Development. The report showed that as of the end of 2008, China had a population of 109.56 million who are 65 years old and above, accounting for 8.3 percent of the nation's total population, an increase of 0.2 percentage points year-on-year. There were 159.89 million people aged 60 and above, accounting for 12 percent of the total population, an increase of 0.4 percentage points year-on-year.

Statistics showed that as of the end of 2008, China had 18,000 legal aid centers for the elderly, 82,000 coordination organizations for safeguarding the rights of the elderly, 39,797 schools for the elderly with 5.041 million students studying at the schools, and 324,000 various kinds of elderly activity centers have been established. 562,000 letters and visits were received in the entire year, effectively safeguarding the legal rights and interests of the elderly.
