BEIJING, Oct. 13 -- A key CPC Central Committee plenary session concluded in Beijing on Friday. It discussed the draft reports to be submitted to the upcoming 17th National Party Congress.

This was the last Plenum of the 16th CPC Central Committee.

The meeting was presided over by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and General Secretary Hu Jintao delivered an important speech.

The session discussed and approved a report which will be presented to the 17th Party Congress, as well as an amendment to the Constitution of the CPC.

Politburo Standing Committee member Wu Bangguo, elaborated on the draft amendment.

The amendment was worked out in September. The Political Bureau says it will reflect the major strategic thoughts the current CPC Central Committee has set forth since 2002, such as the scientific concept of development.

The session reviewed the Political Bureau's work in the past five years. It underlined the progress made in areas including building a model for sustainable growth, structural transformation of the national economy, and advancement of people's living standards.

The meeting also reviewed the investigation report on the case of Shanghai's former party chief, Chen Liangyu.

In July, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided to expel Chen Liangyu from the party after an investigation into a social security fund scandal.

The Plenum endorsed this decision.

The meeting also endorsed the Political Bureau's decision to expel former deputy party chief of Shandong, Du Shicheng, from the CPC.

Du was expelled for taking huge bribes and leading a dissolute life.

Over three hundred Central Committee members and alternate members attended the four-day plenum.

Representatives from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and leading government officials attended as non-voting members.

The Plenum confirmed the opening date for the 17th CPC National Congress to be Monday, October 15th.
