Typhoon-triggered disasters kill 20 in SW China province
 
 

KUNMING, Aug.11,2008 -- Heavy rain and flooding triggered by typhoon Kammuri has claimed 20 lives and caused around 300 million yuan (43.7 million U.S. dollars) of economic loss from Thursday to Sunday in southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau on Monday.

A preliminary investigation by the bureau showed 10 people were missing in the disaster, which had also affected the livelihood of818,300 people in seven counties, with 2,400 displaced.

The typhoon also toppled 1,600 houses, damaged 7,600 houses anddestroyed more than 40,000 hectares of farmland.

The bureau had dispatched 300 tents and assigned disaster relief fund.

Kammuri was the third storm to hit China this season, after tropical storm Kalmaegi and typhoon Fung-Wong.
