HK schools closed, transportation services disrupted for severe tropical storm Fengshen
 
 

HONG KONG, June 25, 2008 -- Severe Tropical Storm Fengshen forced closure of schools and hospitals, and disrupted transportation services in Hong Kong Wednesday morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm Signal Wednesday morning. Red Rainstorm warning was issued at 6 a.m. here and replaced by Yellow Rainstorm warning at 10 a.m. Northern New Territories Flooding Warning was issued at 6:35 a.m. Landslip warning was issued at 8:10 a.m. No major incidents have been reported so far.

The Education Bureau of Hong Kong government announced Wednesday morning classes of all schools are suspended and the Territory-wide Assessment at Secondary Three Level scheduled for Wednesday morning will be postponed to Thursday.

The Hong Kong Airport Authority said a total of 70 flights arriving in or leaving the city had been delayed or canceled on Wednesday morning due to the bad weather.

The Judiciary of Hong Kong announced that all courts, tribunals, court registries and offices would be closed Wednesday morning.

The Immigration Department announced that services at the Immigration Headquarters and all Branch Offices, Registration of Persons Offices, Births, Deaths and Marriage Registries were temporarily suspended until further notice.

The operation of some land transportation services was once disrupted under the storm. All Kowloon Motor Bus services had resumed limited service with effect from 8 a.m. Bus services of other operators had been remaining on limited service. All ferry services remained suspended. All tram services were suspended. All lines of Mass Transit Railway except Light Rail had resumed normal operation from 8:30 a.m.

The Marine Department announced that the China Ferry Terminal has closed down.

The Home Affairs Department has opened 22 temporary shelters and 117 people have sought refuge at the shelters up to 8 a.m.

Hong Kong Disneyland, one of the city's major attractions, also announced in a press release to close the park and will re-open if the No. 8 storm signal is canceled.
