Lhasa promotes use of environment-friendly shopping bags
Environment-friendly shopping bags have been widely used in supermarkets, stores and free markets in Lhasa, the capital city of southwest China' s Tibet Autonomous Region. Meanwhile, more and more businesses and residents have been involved in the campaign to ban the use of plastic bags.

One year after plastic bag ban, how is China doing?
The number of plastic bags used in supermarkets was lowered by 40 billion, or 66 percent, said the NDRC. Xie Zhenhua, NDRC deputy director, gave a more vivid example: all the plastic bags saved in one year equal 1.6 million tonnes of petroleum. He explained that plastic bags take about 200 years to decompose and they greatly contaminate soil and water sources. If they end up in rivers and the sea, they may lead to the deaths of fish, animals and plants.

Public environmental awareness improves a year after plastic bag ban
Gao Jie has collected a dozen non-woven fabric bags over the past year, since China banned free plastic bags from retailers on June 1, 2008. Gao said she used to take it for granted when supermarkets offered free plastic bags. She never felt the urge to avoid using plastic bags although she was aware of "white" pollution caused by such bags. Yet, nearly a year after the government ban, she has developed a new habit of taking a fabric bag with her when going out for shopping.

HK to levy on plastic shopping bags from July
Registered retailers in Hong Kong are required to charge customers not less than 0.5 HK dollars (0.06 U.S. dollars) for each shopping bag from July 7 this year, Hong Kong's top environmental official said here Sunday. Edward Yau, secretary for the Environment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, made the remarks while officiating the launch ceremony of the "Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags" publicity campaign.

Plastic bag use in supermarkets drops by 75 pct
After the "ban on free plastic bags" took effect, a significant drop in the use of plastic shopping bags has been felt at various types of retail outlets. In particular, the ban has been proved most effective in supermarkets where plastic shopping bag consumption fell by over 75 percent. For example, in 106 Wal-Mart outlets around China, the average drop in plastic shopping bag use has been over 80 percent.

All counties in Tibet ban plastic bags
When it comes to December 31, 2009, all county-level cities and tourist attractions in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) will see no disposable plastic shopping bags, sources from a TAR Environment Protection Bureau. According to Zhang Yongze, head of the bureau, this means that TAR's measures against "white" pollution will extend from main cities in the region to all counties and tourist attractions, which is a great action for protecting the environment this year in TAR.

HK young green shoppers to help reduce plastic bags usage
The Little Green Ambassador 2009recruitment scheme was launched here Tuesday to encourage local young generations and their parents to reduce plastics bags usage for a better environment. A total of 1,300 local retail outlets of the Dairy Farm Group, a leading retailer in Asia which initiated the scheme, will become platforms for students and parents to implement the reduction of plastic bag usage.

HK to launch Every Day No Plastic Bag Day campaign
About 2,000 stores in Hong Kong will stop handing out plastic bags to customers starting next month, according to a press release Xinhua received from the Hong Kong Retail Management Association on Thursday. The campaign, announced by the association on Feb. 18, will be launched on March 3, with the aim to encourage further reduction of plastic bag usage across the city. About 2,000 stores of 18 major retailers will be involved.

Yunnan becomes China's vanguard to eliminate plastic bags
Southwest China's Yunnan Province set a model for the country to definitely ban the production, sales and use of plastic bags from the first day of 2009. Shoppers were prepared for the ban, as the provincial government announced the ban in all supermarkets, department stores, shopping outlets, hotels and restaurants as early as June,2008.
