Death toll in NW China quake rises to 2,183
The death toll has climbed to 2,183 from a devastating earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province, with 84 people still missing, the rescue headquarters said Wednesday. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu one week ago, had also left 12,135 injured, of whom 1,434 were in serious condition, the rescue headquarters said.

Significant progress made in quake relief: Chinese vice premier
Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Wednesday significant progress had been made in relief work in Yushu region since it was hit by a strong earthquake a week ago. "Rescuers have reached all affected villages, all the injured have been cured or are being treated, all the seriously injured have been transferred for treatment outside the quake zone, and all survivors have emergency shelters," Hui said at a meeting in Beijing.

China unveils measures to ensure sound financial services in quake-hit Yushu
The Chinese government announced a string of emergency measures Wednesday to provide convenient financial services for people in the quake-hit Qinghai Province and to support reconstruction. The People's Bank of China, the central bank, would lower the deposit reserve ratio for financial institutions in the quake area by 1 percentage point from Wednesday to help increase lending, said a statement posted on the website of the central bank.

Chinese President pledges all-out rebuilding efforts as concerted relief work continues
Chinese President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province Sunday, vowing to help victims rebuild their homes as most of them now settle in tents with basic needs met. The 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu Wednesday morning, had left at least 1,706 dead, 256 missing and 12,128 injured, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.

China welcomes and appreciates the international community's willingness to aid quake relief work in northwest China's Qinghai Province, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Sunday. Jiang said the international community had extended condolences and expressed concerns about the relief work after a 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, Qinghai, early Wednesday, killing at least 1,706 people.

President Hu visits quake-hit Yushu, promises new schools, homes for orphans
Chinese President Hu Jintao Sunday paid a morale-raising visit to quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province, assuring locals of new homes and schools and steadfast relief work. "There will be new schools! There will be new homes!" Hu wrote in chalk on a blackboard in a makeshift classroom in a tent of orphaned students. The president led the students in reading aloud the words he wrote on the blackboard.

China's quake-hit province receives 586 million yuan in donations
China's quake-hit Qinghai Province has received 586 million yuan (85.8 million U.S. dollars) in donations since a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region last Wednesday, the provincial bureau of finance said Monday morning. The total donations as of 4:00 p.m. Sunday included 405 million yuan in cash and 181 million yuan worth of goods and materials.

Chinese Vice Premier orders reconstruction plans for Qinghai quake zone
Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Monday the government would promptly draw up and implement reconstruction plans for the area in northwest China's Qinghai Province that was hit by a strong earthquake on Wednesday. "We must make reconstruction schemes and timetables based on scientific assessment and good planning, and carry them out as soon as possible," Hui said at a State Council, or Cabinet, meeting in Beijing.

Macao allocates $15 mln for disaster relief in quake-stricken Qinghai
The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Monday announced that it decided to provide an amount of 100 million yuan (15 million U.S. dollars) as quake-relief fund for China's Qinghai province which was hit by a major earthquake. Since the disaster area was located in high-altitude region, the quake-relief operation has met with difficulty, and the fund is aimed at offering more assistance to the Chinese mainland authorities in rescuing the quake victims, according to a press release from the SAR government.
