BEIJING, June 26, 2008 – The internet-based activity promoted under the slogan "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes" officially began on Wednesday in Beijing. Aimed at promoting appropriate internet usage for a pleasant internet environment during the Olympic Games, the activity was met with much approval.

According to china.com.cn, the nation-wide campaign to control internet content has a strong base in moral education. Leaders have urged appropriate measures to combat uncivilized internet material. Efforts have been upped to uncover those internet sites that have a negative impact on society, for example, by employing adult themes, engaging in activities to deceive web users, disseminating harmful computer viruses, clogging email boxes with junk mail, etc.

China's State Council Information Office vice-minister Cai Mingzhao and Internet Society of China (ISC) chairman Hu Qiheng were joined by various leaders and representatives of related organizations and departments, and over 50 internet-based company representatives at the opening ceremony.

Hu emphasized that with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games quickly approaching, the internet-based "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes" activity was necessary. Internet management personnel must understand their responsibilities and strengthen self-governance, she said.

Cai remarked that internet representatives must understand the impression they make on society, and so must do their best to promote positive aspects to ensure civilized progression.

As internet use is an important reflection of society, the opportunity that has been provided by the Olympic Games should encourage internet managers to show a more suitable face. He urged the purging from all internet sites any content not aimed at advancing society.
