Paralympics volunteer: A helping hand to happiness

Beijing's vast number of Olympic volunteers are continuing their work at the Paralympics. About 90 percent remain on duty, and some new members have also joined the group. Take a look at a special new member of volunteers whose efforts to help the disabled goes beyond the Paralympics.

Unlike the Olympics, some new skills are required for the paralympics volunteers. Lessons are given for close contact with disabled people.

Fu Xuezhong, Paralympics volunteer, said, "If you push me forwards down the slope, my body may lean forward and feels empty. But if you draw me backwards, my back could stick to the wheelchair, and makes me feel more stable."

The man in the wheelchair is 51-year-old Fu Xuezhong, a Paralympics volunteer who is disabled. His job is to demonstrate measures to assist those like himself.

Fu has suffered a deformity in his left leg for ten years, but therapy enables him to stand and walk for short distances. Fu now helps disabled people through a service center named "Sweet House".

Fu Xuezhong said, "I think the disabled people should have more communication with the outside world, rather than staying at home. So I hope that from this sweet house, the disabled people can step out, and dissolve into the society with more happiness."

Over 100 warm families are now serving in local communities over the city. Disabled people can find and follow their interests here. But for the upcoming Paralympics, Fu Xuezhong has this hope.

Fu Xuezhong said, "I hope to get more Paralympics tickets for the disabled people. We can also watch the games on TV here together. I hope more disabled people can share the athlete's spirit to strive for the best."

Fu is quite satisfied with his current work. He hopes to share his happiness with more disabled people during the games.
