It's not all about good looks

Victory ceremony hostess trainees answere reporters' questions in perfect English.

BEIJING, January 10, 2008 -- A white dress and matching jacket with water-and-cloud-pattern embroidered sleeves; neatly styled hair; well-groomed eyebrows; perfect steps -- add to this an angelic smile -- and there you have the polished look and first impression given by each of the victory ceremony hostesses of the "Good Luck Beijing" sport events.

Approximately 380 volunteers will serve as victory ceremony hostesses during the Beijing Olympic Games, according to Director Zhao Dongming of BOCOG's Cultural Activities Department. Most of the women will be students at universities in Beijing between the ages of 18 and 25, with a height between 168 and 178 cm. Physical appearances aside, the candidates should have elegance and grace, and they must be tough mentally, as they will undergo demanding training and have to withstand stringent requirements.

"As a Chinese, I am extremely happy to be involved with the preparatory work for the Olympics," said one volunteer who will serve at the "Good Luck Beijing" sport events.

In speaking with foreign journalists, the women responded to questions in fluent English.

Yet, they showed modesty. "My English speaking skills could use improvement and my professional skills could be stronger to meet Olympic standards," one hostess said.
