Beijing's colleges are main source of Olympic volunteers

BEIJING, February 25, 2008 -- Over 70 percent of the volunteer applicants for the Beijing Olympic Games are college students in the capital city, incomplete statistics show.

So far all universities and colleges have completed general training for the applicants, with a focus on more than 10,000 key applicants, the Beijing Daily reported.

In 2007, over 20,000 student volunteers from 50 colleges in Beijing offered their voluntary services for 26 international sport events in the "Good Luck Beijing" series in preparation for the Olympic Games. At present Beijing's universities and colleges carry out 90 percent of the voluntary services for the Games.

Meanwhile, Peking University and five other universities, where six of the 31 Beijing-based Olympic venues are located, collected a total of 200 million yuan to plant trees and improve landscaping on their campuses.

To create a favorable social environment for the Games, more than one million college students and teachers have joined a campaign themed "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes" to contribute to the concept of "New Beijing, Great Olympics."
