Information of Previous Beijing Forum on Human Rights

Oct. 19, 2010 (chinahumanrights.org) -- China Society for Human Rights Studies has successfully held the first and second Beijing Forum on Human Rights in April 21 to 23, 2008 and November 2 to 4 2009 in Beijing.

The theme of the 1st Beijing Forum is "Security, Development and Human Rights", with three sub-themes as "Development and Human Rights", "Security and Human Rights" and "Diversity of Civilization and Human Rights Development". About 110 human rights experts, scholars and officers from 31 countries and international organizations including China, America, Canada, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Australia, Ukraine, Japan, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Brazil, UN and EU participated in the Forum. Mr. Wang Chen, Minister of the State Council Information Office, Mr. Luo Haocai, Vice-chairman of the National Committee of the 10th CPPCC, President of China Society for Human Rights Studies, Mr. Sergei A. ORDZHONIKIDZE, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Ms. Nina KARPACHOVA, Ukraine Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights gave a speech on the Opening Ceremony. The participants figured out that the 1st Forum retrospected the development of global human rights since the issuing of Universal Declaration of Human Rights 60 years ago, analyzed the opportunities and challenges confronted currently, offered an important chance for communication and cooperation for global development, security and the benign interaction and harmonious development for human rights, thus bore a significant and far-reaching influence.

The theme of the 2nd Forum is "Harmonious Development and Human Rights", with "Human Rights Protection in the Context of International Financial Crisis", "People-Oriented Development and Human Rights Protection" and "Poverty Elimination and Human Rights Protection" as its sub-themes. About 100 senior officers and experts on human rights from 26 countries, including China, America, Britain, Switzerland, Hungary, Australia, Peru, Ukraine, Berulas, Indonesia, Philippine, Iran, Mongolia, Kenya, and Liberia attended the forum. Mr. Wang Chen, Minister of the State Council Information Office, Mr. Luo Haocai, Vice-chairman of the National Committee of the 10th CPPCC, President of China Society for Human Rights Studies, Ms. Nina KARPACHOVA, Ukraine Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights and Mr. Samuel Kofi WOODS, Ⅱ, Minister of Public Works of Republic of Liberia gave a speech on the Opening Ceremony. The participants shared the view that this forum was held in time and of great significance, especially against the backdrop of the global financial crisis which challenged the global development and in an unprecedented way, and threatened the universal fulfillment of human rights severely. Participants held the opinions that human rights went hand in hand with harmonious development and the global financial crisis called for new concept of development as well as human rights. Development is an inner appeal of human advancement and the material foundation of national prosperity, social harmony and the well-being of its people. Moreover, it is the inalienable human rights of people of all nations.
