2 workers killed, 1 injured in truck crash in Italy

MILAN, Italy, July 30,2014-- Two workers were killed and one seriously injured on Tuesday when a truck rear-ended a cleaning vehicle on the Mestre bypass near Italy's Venice, local reports said.

The accident occurred on the bypass which links Milan to Venice in northern Italy. A lorry violently rear-ended a cleaning vehicle at the roadside, hitting the three workers cleaning the road ahead of it.

One of the victims was killed immediately while another died later from the injuries, according to Venice-based Il Gazzettino newspaper. The third worker, an Albanian national, was seriously injured and rushed to hospital by helicopter.

Investigation was underway to determine the circumstances of the accident.

Figures provided by the Italian national statistics institute Istat on the basis of a preliminary estimate showed that 182,700 road accidents resulting in death or injury occurred last year, 2. 2 percent fewer than in 2012.

In 2013 the number of deaths within 30 days was 3,400, while those injured people were 259,500, 6.9 percent and 2 percent fewer than the previous year, respectively, Istat said.
