BRUSSELS, July 31,2014-- In the 28 member states of the European Union (EU), the unemployment rate for non-EU citizens was 21.3 percent in 2013, more than twice the level for locals, referred to as "nationals," Eurostat, the bloc's statistical office said Wednesday.

The unemployment rate for nationals aged 20 to 64 in EU states was recorded at 10 percent in 2013.

However, the share of people unemployed for 12 months or more was at almost the same level, 48.6 percent for non-EU citizens and for 49.4 percent nationals.

Meanwhile, more non-EU citizens hold temporary contracts, with a share of 20.2 percent, compared with 12.4 percent of nationals.

Employment rates differ most between non-EU citizens and nationals in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Finland and Germany, according to Eurostat.
