August 11,2014   By:Xinhua

REYKJAVIK, Aug. 11,2014-- The Icelandic government has decided to receive 13 Syrian refugees and started the preparation work, said the Ministry of Welfare on Friday.

A ministry statement said the decision was made following government's resolution on an invocation from the United Nations Refugee Agency in May. The agency called on all capable members to accept more Syrian refugees.

The Syrian refugee group being received by Iceland are from four families, including six children. The government's emphasis was placed on inviting refugees who were injured or struggling with illness and in urgent need of health care, said the statement.

The Iceland government asked the refugee committee to deal with resettlement issues related to the 13 refugees, who were now staying in Turkey, in cooperation with local authorities of Reykjavik and the Icelandic Red Cross.
