Marking the first World Humanitarian Day, UN officials and staff paid tribute to the efforts made by aid workers around the world who have sacrificed their time and their lives helping those in need.
In 2008, the UN General Assembly proclaimed Aug. 19 as World Humanitarian Day to commemorate those who had lost their lives helping others, and the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, which claimed the lives of 22 UN staff members.

One Chinese company, Sinovac Biotech Ltd., announced early on Aug. 19, 2009 that it had completed medical trials on a new vaccine, with promising results. This is the first trial on H1N1 flu vaccine completing preliminary evaluation in the world.

National Ministry of Health published a work plan on the management of close contacts of A (H1N1) flu cases. According to it, the one who has been confirmed as the close contact must accept home medical observation. The observation time lasts for a week. Then, the medical and health organization in charge of the observation will not provide health certificate in writing any longer.

The website of defense ministry, www.mod.gov.cn, was launched at Aug. 20, 2009. it has three versions, Chinese(GB), Chinese(Big 5) and English.

Central government officials from Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Health were sent to Wugang in Hunan province in Central China to assist local authorities in dealing "more appropriately" with the lead poisoning scandal.
