Austrian jobless rate increase continues with explosion in long-term unemployed

VIENNA, Dec.3,2015-- The Austrian unemployment rate for the month of November has increased 5.6 percent year-on-year to reach 430,107 people without work, making up a total national unemployment rate of 9.2 percent.
The figures released by the social affairs ministry on Tuesday were marked in particular by a massive 191-percent spike in long-term unemployment, increasing by 31,398 people year-on-year to a total 47,845 persons that have been out of work for 12 months or more.
"November has been characterized by further rising unemployment, though at a somewhat flatter level than previous months," social affairs minister Rudolf Hundstorfer stated of the figures.
Notable unemployment increases were recorded in all major industries, such as an 8.1-percent increase in the retail and wholesale trade sectors to over 50,000 persons, and tourism where it increased 4.6 percent to 60,505 persons.
Unemployment amongst persons aged 50 and over increased a sizeable 13.5-percent to 97,318 persons overall.
One positive amongst the figures was that the number of available jobs also increased to 31,021 vacant jobs marking an increase of 25.4 percent over November 2014.
