MEP implements staggered cement production to reduce pollution

Nov. 9, 2016 -- Cement producers in northern China have been instructed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) to stagger production during peak load times in winter months in order to reduce pollution, according to a notice issued by the ministry.
Similar rules have also been imposed on foundry enterprises and thermal power plants.
Meteorological statistics show that the La Nina phenomenon this winter may lead to high humidity and the large-scale deposition of pollution particles, especially in northern China, the MEP said. The ministry also stressed that air treatment this winter is not only intended to finish the yearly task of environmental protection, but also to contribute to the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) issued by the State Council in 2013.
As a result, the MEP has mandated staggered cement production during peak times throughout the winter. In addition, the ministry has also ordered the electricity, foundry and brick industries to produce during off-peak times. The thermal-power-generating units failing to meet emissions standards will be shut down during peak times from Nov. 15, 2016 to March 15, 2017, and substandard distillation and boiler enterprises will be ordered to suspend production.
