July 18, 2017 -- China has surpassed the U.S. as the world’s largest producer of renewable energy in 2016, according to BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2017, published by British energy giant BP.
Renewable energy, excluding hydro power, grew by 14.1 percent in the world in 2016, the report said.
“China is now leading global renewable energy development,” said Spencer Dale, BP’s chief economist.
China has been the largest investor in clean energy since 2012, spending a total of 111 billion US dollars in 2015, accounting for 33.6 percent of the world’s total.
The review said that China has the largest installed capacity of wind power and solar power in the world by the end of 2016. Meanwhile, China’s carbon emissions have been reduced, which means China has achieved success in energy reform.
“China has been focused on developing renewable energy over the past ten years. As a major driving force of photovoltaic energy, China’s newly-increased installed capacity of photovoltaic in 2016 accounts for 45 percent of the capacity worldwide,” according to Deutsche Welle.By: Shi Dongdong
