October 24, 2017 -- A cultural exchange delegation from northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region visited France from October 19th to 21st. The delegation held in-depth discussions with French officials, scholars, and overseas Chinese during the three-day visit.

Wang Yanzhong, head of the delegation and director of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, introduced policies and achievements that Xinjiang has made in eco-social development, livelihood improvement and the rights and interests protection of women and children. In particular, the “Belt and Road” Initiative has brought huge development opportunities to Xinjiang, Wang said.

In a seminar, a variety of issues were discussed, such as cultures of ethnic minorities,  China’s efforts and  achievements in tackling imbalanced development, balance between economic development and environment protection, think tank building and management of religious affairs.

“Western countries have little knowledge about China’s Xinjiang and made some wrong judgments,” said Barthélémy Courmont, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS).

“Xinjiang’s achievements are impressive,” he said.

He added that the “Belt and Road” Initiative is significant to the global economy and international politics and promotes integration between civilizations and harmony between peoples. France and China will strengthen connectivity and exchanges.
