May 12, 2017 -- The international community needs to accelerate global poverty elimination and build a new-type cooperative relationship aimed for win-win results, urged Liu Jieyi, Chinese ambassador to the UN, at the general debate on poverty reduction on May 9.
All parties should step up efforts to optimize the partnership for global development. Developed countries should fulfill their promises of providing assistance to developing countries and helping them solve development problems such as capacity building, debt relieving and market opening, Liu said at the debate.
China has lifted more than 700 million people in rural areas out of poverty, reducing the number from 166 million in 2010 to 43.35 million in 2016. China aims to eradicate poverty in the next 4 years, realizing 10 years ahead of schedule the target set in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said Liu.
For the past 60 years, China has offered almost 400 billion yuan and dispatched over 600,000 aid workers to 166 countries and international organizations. China has cancelled debts for the least developed countries for 7 times. China has also been actively providing medical assistance to 69 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Caribbean Region and Oceania, Liu said.
