July 17, 2017 -- More than 150 officials, scholars and entrepreneurs attended the Sustainable Agricultural Development Forum held on July 6 at the UN headquarters to discuss international agricultural cooperation and sustainable agricultural development.

“With only about 7 percent of the arable land in the world, China has fed 20 percent of the world's population and 95 percent of its grain is self supplied,” said Zhu Tingju, senior researcher of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

“Nearly 800 million people in the world are starving and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa. The number will increase by 2 billion by 2050,” said Ho Chi-ping, vice chairman and secretary general of China Energy Fund Committee (CEFC).

“China’s great agricultural achievements have offered meaningful experiences for Africa and the world,” said Frederick Shava, president of the UN Economic and Social Council.

The Belt and Road Initiative was a focus at the forum. “It is an initiative of common interest for people all over the world and will help build a sustainable development mode to increase crop production and improve people’s living standards,” said Beverley Silver, professor with Johns Hopkins University.
