Reducing child poverty essential to social progress

An official of the UNICEF Office for China said China has made great strides in poverty reduction, especially in education. However, the bad living conditions in some rural areas affect children’s physical, mental and emotional development.
In 2013, the UNICEF in cooperation with the IPRCC chose Hubei Province as a pilot province to investigate the condition of child poverty in China’s rural areas. The study shows that child poverty is mainly caused by inadequate access to sanitation facilities, malnutrition and unsafe drinking water.

The findings of the UNICEF suggest prevention measures at an early stage for child poverty can save social development costs in the future.
