October 11, 2017 -- Injuries caused by gun violence cost Americans $2.8 billion in hospital bills each year, according to a study published in the journal Health Affairs. The study looked at all the emergency medical costs related to firearm injuries from 2006 to 2014 in the US.

Sakeran, professor of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and one of the authors of the study, said that other cost such as working time loss and legal fees are not included, therefore the actual cost of firearm-related injuries in the US each year is far beyond $2.8 billion.

The study also found that gun violence does much more harm to men than women. The number of men injured by firearm is nine times more than that of women. Meanwhile, young people are more likely to be hurt by firearm for about 50 percent of the patients are between the ages of 18 and 29.

Despite the high cost of firearm-related injuries, little action has been taken to prevent it. An ironic fact is that research grant for gun culture is very limited in the US and some researches are even prohibited although gun violence has posed great threat to public health.
