China elected to UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage

June 8, 2018 -- China was elected to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, securing 123 votes at the 7th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France on June 6, 2018.
 
Composed of 24 member states, the Committee performs many important functions such as carrying out the resolutions approved by the Conference of States Parties, revising operational manuals of the Convention, reviewing the application of Intangible Cultural Heritage and so on.
 
Half of the Committee members were renewed. Apart from China, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Poland, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Djibouti, Togo, and Kuwait were also elected. The newly-elected members will serve the Committee from 2018 to 2022.
 
The Chinese cultural delegation was headed by Yu Qun, member of the leading Party members’ group of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
