Better legal aid services to promote human rights

Oct. 10, 2018 -- China has set up legal aid workstations in detention centers and courts nationwide to provide suspects and defendants with free legal aid, according to Lin Xi, deputy director of the Legal Aid Department of the Ministry of Justice.
Under this mechanism, criminal suspects and defendants will get timely and free legal aid services in the stages of investigation, examination and prosecution and trial to better protect their legal rights and interests, said Lin.
In particular, lawyers can play a positive role in supervising law enforcements during these stages, effectively reducing the acts of extorting confessions by torture and gaining relevant evidence materials through illegal means, Lin added.
Courts and detention centers across the country should have lawyers on duty dispatched by legal aid institutions, according to a last August document released by the authorities.
Lin said that ensuring detained criminal suspects and defendants’ access to lawyers will be conducive to promoting judicial justice and protecting human rights.
