May 17, 2019 -- The seminar, titled “Global Partnerships for Poverty Reduction,” was held in the Rome Exhibition Center on May 15, 2019.
Xia Gengsheng, deputy director of the State Council Leading Group Office for Poverty Alleviation and Development, introduced China’s great achievements in poverty reduction at the seminar.
China has lifted 82.39 million people out of poverty from 2012 to 2018, reducing the impoverished population from 98.99 million to 16.6 million. And the impoverishment rate is decreasing from 10.2% to 1.7%, said Xia.
By learning from other countries’ successful experience and based on China’s reality, the Chinese government is eyeing a new poverty reduction strategy after 2020, said Xia.
Melanie Ulrich, foreign relation officer of the European Representative Office of Asian Development Bank (ADB), applauded China’s remarkable achievements in reducing poverty, saying that the successful experience that China shares with other developing countries are China’s biggest contribution to the global poverty eradication and sustainable development.
Tang Shengyao, director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), said that technological innovation plays an important role in promoting rural development. The seminar will raise the awareness of global partnership’s role in sustainable development, which is the core of South-South cooperation and three-party cooperation.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP), the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) and China Internet Information Center (CIIC).
