Nicaraguan gov't, opposition agree on prisoner release
April 10,2019   By:Xinhua
April 10, 2019-- The Nicaraguan government confirmed on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the opposition Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD) for the release of prisoners detained during last year's unrest.

"We have advanced, agreed on and approved a road map, an agenda of negotiation, an agreement for the strengthening of rights and guarantees, and an agreement on the release of prisoners with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross," said a statement from the delegation of the Government of National Reconciliation and Unity (GRUN).

The statement also called for implementation of the accords already agreed upon and the advancement of issues still under discussion.

The GRUN delegation affirmed its commitment to advancing conversations with sectors of the local opposition, grouped under the ACJD, which demands institutional reforms and early elections.

The general elections are scheduled in November 2021 according to the calendar of the Supreme Electoral Council, while the ACJD demands that the date be moved up.

Nicaragua has experienced political instability since April last year, when police shot rubber bullets and tear gas into a crowd of protesters against social security reforms.
