A human rights webinar on how to protect the right to health during the pandemic prevention and control was held on Aug.11. The teleconference was organized by the Center for Human Rights Studies and the Law School of Fudan University. Around 30 experts and scholars joined the virtual event.
Brigit Toebes, professor of law at the University of Groningen, expounded the concept of the right to health. She said that a country must fulfill the obligation to protect people’s right to health in dealing with the plague. Weixing SHEN, dean of the School of Law, Tsinghua University, gave a theoretical analysis of the value balance and mechanism design for rule of law building in public health.
Some medical professionals and volunteers who joined the fight against coronavirus talked about how China protects people’s right to health during the battle. Under the leadership of the Chinese government, medical professionals, community workers and volunteers from all walks of life have been fighting together, which helps the country contain the rapid spread of COVID-19 as soon as possible.
Participants also discussed how to better protect human rights during the pandemic. Many anti-coronavirus measures are very effective but might restrict some human rights to some extent, said experts. Protecting some people’s right to health might impose some restrictions on others. It’s important to strike a balance between different aspects of human rights during the epidemic fight.
Participants also proposed some solutions and suggestions on how to further contain the coronavirus and what can be done to effectively respond to future health emergencies.
