April 1,2020 -- On March 28th, China’s eight human rights education and training centers including the Human Rights Research Center of Nankai University and the Human Rights Research Center of Renmin University of China jointly held a webinar on human rights protection amid the COVID-19 outbreak. 120 experts and scholars from 30 universities had an animated discussion on topics such as the right to subsistence, the right to know and to express, the protection of vulnerable people and personal freedom and rights equality during the epidemic control.

Chang Jian, director of the Human Rights Research Center of Nankai University, said in the opening remarks that the academic circle of human rights has the responsibility to explore how to balance the protection of human rights and the epidemic control, which is an important issue faced by the nation when it makes epidemic prevention policies and measures.

The scholars agreed that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, governments at all levels have done an effective job and the epidemic has been largely contained in China. The human rights of the Chinese people have been well protected during the epidemic control.

This is the first seminar on epidemic prevention and human rights protection and also the first online academic conference. The seminar is an opportunity to pool wisdom of China’s human rights scholars to improve China’s human rights protection policies and measures during major public health emergencies.
