Respected Chair,

Sept.24,2021 -- I am Miao HE. I am speaking on behalf of the China Society for Human Rights Studies on arbitrary detention. The protection of personal freedom is the legitimate foundation for the existence of domestic and international law. International human rights law regard the principle of prohibition of arbitrary detention as the theoretical basis and practical guidance for guaranteeing personal freedom. International and regional human rights instruments, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the American Convention on Human Rights, expressly prohibit arbitrary detention. However, Canadian authorities have arbitrarily detained Mrs MENG Wanzhou for more than 1000 days since 1 December, 2018, this action is an open violation of international human rights law. We appeal to Canadian authorities to immediately end the unreasonable detention of Mrs MENG wanzhou, and let her safely return to China as soon as possible. We call on Canadian authorities to truly fulfill their commitment to respect and protect human rights.
