June 29,2021   By:CGTN
June 29, 2021 -- We begin our show with a focus on the ongoing UN Human Rights Council. The latest? Experts and civil society from developing countries are calling the developed world to better protect their social and economic rights. These came from an online event on Friday in Beijing, discussing human rights in the pandemic era.

Experts say COVID-19 has highlighted "the most fundamental of human rights" that include economic, social and cultural rights. And some of these same rights have been seriously undermined by the response to the pandemic, such as the hoarding of vaccines. Here's what some of them have to say.

ZHANG YUNFEI Board Member of UN Association of China "Inequalities in terms of income, wealth, education, gender and ethnics are widening. Yet the importance of economic, social, and cultural rights have never been fully acknowledged by the developed countries, and persistent inadequate attention has been paid to these rights by the UN human rights system."

SUNILA HAMAL Secretary General National Rehabilitation Society for the Disabled (Nepal) "Poverty strike people living in crowded housing where social distancing is impractical, and as a result, they cannot follow the proper hygiene standard. The economic, social and cultural rights of these underprivileged people are under immense threat."
