Nov. 23, 2021 -- Rural revitalisation is a key part of national development efforts in China. Officials in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region held a press conference on Sunday describing some of the achievements made in recent years.
The beautiful embroideries on these gowns were made by Ranagul Subi in the town of Wubao in the East of Xinjiang. She has mastered the traditional Uygur embroidery skills and her work has been showcased at top international fashion shows. She says her career was launched by the local government.
RANAGUL SUBI Embroidery Artist "In recent years, the government has given increasing protection to the traditional cultures of ethnic minorities. In 2012, the government of Wubao town called on local women to improve their family income through embroidery. In September 2014, with the help of the local government, I established an Embroidery Professional Cooperative, and gathered women in the village to earn money with their skills."
Many parts of Xinjiang have launched similar schemes as part of efforts to increase rural residents' income. In the first quarter of 2021, the per capita disposable income of rural residents was up 11.5 percent year on year. As residents income increases, it also means improved living conditions.
ARKIN ABLIZ Resident, Nanhu Village, Hami city "With the increase of income, people's living habits have changed a lot. We used to sleep on beds made of clay, but now we sleep on beds made with wood. Before, we depended on firewood for heating and cooking. Now we use gas."
Revitalizing rural areas was an important development strategy announced in 2017 at the national congress of the Communist Party of China. And since then, Xinjiang has been working in line with this strategy in various ways.
XU TAO Deputy Head of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region "We promoted the revitalization of rural industries, human resources, culture, ecosystems, and organizations. And accelerated the modernization of rural governance and agriculture."
Local officials say the reformation of key rural areas in Xinjiang will be further accelerated over the next five years, and the support and protection for agriculture will be further strengthened.
