Aug. 3, 2022 -- In Yueyahu township of Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, lovely handicrafts woven with hemp fiber are favored by tourists.

Often in shapes of local animal species, such as Tan sheep, the products have been generating income for residents since 2017.

Zhang Jing, a fourth-generation inheritor of hemp weaving — an intangible cultural heritage of Ningxia — started her workshop in 2017 to train local villagers on weaving techniques.

"Starting from simple articles such as cup mats, many of the villagers have become skillful enough for more complicated things," Zhang said.

She said many of the trainees are elderly, disabled or women who stayed home when their husbands migrated to distant places for work.

As the craft has been working effectively to increase incomes, local officials and experts have dubbed the business the "bedside economy" because people can finish the products at home without supervision.
