China's top legislature reviews fire insurance law for public buildings

BEIJING, June 24, 2008 -- China's top legislature is again reviewing a law change that would require public venues with potential fire risks that could cause major casualties to take out fire insurance.

The draft amendment to China's Fire Control Law was undergoing its second hearing by the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, on Tuesday.

Details concerning the implementation of the insurance requirement are to be specified by the State Council, or Cabinet, the draft says.

The draft was submitted to the NPC Standing Committee for the first review in April, and had been published on-line for public discussion and submissions from early May to June 5.
