Shaanxi Research Association for Women and Family, founded in 1986 and consisting of over 100 members including 20 full-time and part-time staff, is a non-profit NGO with juridical person status. The purpose  of the Association is caring for women’s development and promoting gender equality. The four fields the Association focused on are: rural women’s development, legal aids, domestic violence, gender training, and the Association has undertaken about 60 various projects in the past years.

·The strategic goals for the years from 2001 to 2005
1 To show concern for the difficulties and obstacles rural women confront in poverty, health, education and participation of community affairs; to empower women; to improve the status of rural women.
2 To give emotional and legal support to those women perplexed by marriage and family problems; to enhance women’s self-confidence and ability to solve difficulties.
3 To boost the education of the public on gender and to awaken the whole society to women problems.
4 To promote the research in women problems during the social transition; to advocate and lobby for related policies.
5 To render support to women victims of domestic violence and to effect a social support environment so as to prevent and stop domestic violence.
6 To improve the structure and work regulations of the Association and to enhance the abilities of its staff; to build a participatory and democratic woman organization with capacity for sustained development.
